‘Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly’ (Mt 15:28)
The Israelites rebelled and grumbled against the Lord, angering him (First Reading). In contrast the faith of the Canaanite woman is striking. Even after Christ tests her by saying he was sent only to the Jews she is steadfast in her belief in him (Gospel).
Faith is the key to all the promises made in the Bible. Jesus said that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, we can move mountains. ‘Mountains’ can mean any problem we face – sickness, broken relationships, unemployment, debt…
I remember a man telling us about getting a medical report that his wife had cancer. He was shaken but, being a man of God, he went before the Blessed Sacrament and placed the report at the feet of Jesus, surrendering and praying. This calmed him down, and he could break the news gently to his wife. After initial treatment, she was totally healed. I believe his faith in Jesus cured her.
Faith can indeed move mountains. The gutsy Canaanite woman was blessed with the healing of her daughter because of her unflinching faith in Jesus (Focus). So too will we see mountains being moved in our lives, if we only have faith.
